Still on Tao

I'm still on the island of Tao because I've fallen ill. The first day I was here I felt achy all over but thought nothing of it. The following day, yesterday, the achiness all over was worse and I was completely drained of energy. I could barely get up off the bed and when I did was very feeble. Feeling a lot better today though so will probably stay another day or so to get fully better. I think it's just fatigue perhaps combined with catching a flu-like bug rather than anything more serious like malaria or dengue.

Being alone and ill in a foreign country is pretty miserable but I'm in a good place to recuperate: a hut by the beach, weather is not too hot, food nearby, and there are no mosquitoes. I've been able to read books and watch films on my laptop.

In my most delirious state I had some crazy dreams and here is the best one. My girlfriend and I are in New York and are going to an opera. A grey-haired Liza Minnelli is there and my girlfriend knows her and is going to introduce me later. I've brought a cat from my childhood, Polly, with me. As the opera starts Polly jumps off my lap and runs under the front row of the seats making a noise. The opera is stopped while I try to get Polly out. I'm so embarrassed that once I get the cat out I'm going to just go home but then I think about putting Polly in the car and coming back to watch the opera and meet Liza. Then I woke up.

Interpretations please.

  2. No interpretation of the dream, but I looked Ko Tao up, and you definitely chose a fantastic place to become ill. The photographs make it look idyllic. I hope the people there are treating you well, and you continue to improve. Latest soccer news, Italy 1, NZ 1, and if it hadn't been for some slightly pointless shirt holding in the goal box, and Italian skill at falling over, it might have been an NZ win. Not sure I can quite believe that.
    best wishes, Carolyn

  3. Simon, please forgive my concern but I do think you should go by a medical clinic and get a check up. Tell them of the kitten nip so that they can eliminate that as any potential source.
Get well soon so we can enjoy your adventure.

  4. I'm feeling a lot better today and so don't see the point of seeking medical attention, which is not risk-free. Will do if I deteriorate.

I'm staying at the Bluewind in Sairee Beach but I'm about to move hotel so I can get a hot shower and to get away from the annoying English uni students. Will let you know my new place when I know.

  5. thanks for the update. let us know where you land at least for a few days and you are sure the illness has gotten behind you.
Sorry you are having an illness so far away from home. I got stuck in a hotel once where i was sick for two weeks and couldn't leave. Had chicken soup sent in but it was a very lonely place to be.
    cheers

  6. Dream interpretation: Polly represents the normal life you have left behind in New Zealand. You've taken Polly to the opera because you think you can maintain a commitment to normal life and career while also being on your big adventure. Polly's disturbance of the opera indicates that your subconscious doesn't think you can do this. You have to decide between Polly and adventure - and you're leaning towards adventure.
    That will be $500 please.

  7. Hello everyone,

Simon is having internet connection problems at his hotel so has asked me to let you all know that he's okay. A case of dengue fever means he'll be taking it easy for a few more days on Koh Tao, but it won't be long before he's back exploring and adventuring. Watch this space!
